Chicago State University is a predominantly black public university in Chicago, Illinois, United States. It includes an honors program for undergraduates and offers bachelor's and master's degrees in the arts and sciences. CSU was founded in 1867 as the Cook County Normal School, an innovative teachers college. Chicago Public Schools assumed control from the county and it became Chicago Teachers College. Northeastern Illinois University began as a branch campus in 1949. Illinois began funding the college in 1951 and assumed control in 1965, transforming it into a comprehensive state college. CSU is a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
