The ruins sit atop a hill overlooking the city of Oaxaca; and, close enough to warrant an easy day trip from there. Some of the main pyramids are well restored, while a few others appear less refurb…Full review by Gareth C

A must see if you are in Oaxaca! The archeological ruins are equal in size and scope to Chitzen Itza in the Yucatan. Reasonably accessible except for the main pyramid. The panoramic views of Oaxaca a…Full review by Alan N
I can’t climb many stairs and especially not steep ones. Can I still enjoy the sights of Monte Alban without doing a lot of climbing stairs? Walking uphill is fine as long as it doesn’t involve many stairs.

You can enjoy the sights even if you cannot climb many steps. But be prepared because it`s a long walk, you should bring water with you. Happy trails!
Why does Tripadvisor charge more than twice as much for a guided tour of Monte Alban. All the other trip packages there were 300 pesos or less which is 15.00 US dollars. However, Tripadvisor charged USD $35.00 for the same exact trip.

You can do better than $300. See my review of Monte Alban for details. We paid $60 pesos for a return van trip and 90 for admission = $150 per person. We took sandwiches and bought water for a good price at the site. We liked being self directed. We could take our time and also move around the site to avoid groups. By late afternoon, we almost had the place to ourselves. It is a lovely spot just to sit under a tree and admire the view of the valley. As to why TA charges more. I cannot answer but we did find numerous tours that were cheaper than the TA price (we booked through the San Angel hostel). Example: $250 pesos for 9 hours in a van: El Arbor, Hierve del Agua, weaving village, Mitla and mescal tasting. Our hack, take the Spanish tours. There is usually someone on board who is bilingual and can help.
