You may be able to see it without being part of a tour. I didn't take a tour, just chose specific sections to see

The Sofitel Lafayette Square is a pleasant walk to all the Smithsonian museums and galleries, and an excellent hotel too.

Not unless they love art. Kids were much more drawn to the Museum of Natural History.
