Don't want to purchase advance tickets but will only be in area for one day. Is it too risky to wait to buy tickets directly at plantation for same day tour?

If you are flexible with the tour times and don’t mind waiting possibly you should be fine. You can also call the Plantation- they are very helpful.
Do you have to pay for a tour or can you walk some of the grounds freely?

I’m pretty sure it is all paid for tours at the Laura Plantation: but well worth it. Some of the other plantations allow you to wander the grounds but the house tours always are done officially.
