Ecuador will apply the tariff to “ensure fair treatment” of Ecuadorian producers, President Daniel Noboa said on Monday.

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum on Tuesday dismissed the announcement from Ecuador's president a day earlier to apply tariffs on Mexican goods, noting that her country's trade with Ecuador represents a tiny share of exports.

Ecuador announced it will impose a 27% tariff on all Mexican goods. However, fewer than 0.1% of all Mexican exports in 2023 went to the South American country
