The formal decision to label the Yemeni militant group reverses President Joe Biden’s delisting in 2021, after more than a year of attacks on U.S. Navy and commercial vessels.

Some Senate Democrats are warming to the Trump administration’s decision to reimpose a Foreign Terrorist Organization designation for the Iran-backed Houthi terrorist group in Yemen — a move that the Biden administration refused to make throughout its term after previously delisting the group as terrorists in 2021 — while others remain skeptical.

Hundreds of attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden earned Yemen-based Ansarallah, commonly called "Houthis," a designation as a foreign terrorist organization.

The U.S. State Department on Tuesday said it was implementing the designation of Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi movement as a "foreign terrorist organization" after President Donald Trump's call for the move earlier this year.

The Trump Administration returned the Houthis to the FTO list after President Donald Trump issued an executive order targeting the group on the second day of his term. The US Treasury followed the FTO designation with a round of sanctions against senior Houthi operatives involved in financing,

"Any aggressive American step against us will only make us more committed and strict in our positions," a Houthi source told Newsweek.
