Russian refineries are processing more crude oil in the hope of boosting fuel exports after new U.S. sanctions on Russian tankers and traders made exports of unprocessed crude more difficult, two industry sources said and data showed.

The reported strike comes two nights after Ukrainian forces launched a joint attack against the refinery that allegedly damaged multiple on-site facilities.

Ukraine also said it had hit the Ryazan refinery. Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine's centre for countering disinformation, described the refinery as one target, along with the Kremniy plant in Bryansk, which Kyiv says produces microelectronics for Russian weapons systems.

Videos showed fireballs over a facility in Ryazan, 110 miles southeast of Moscow. Kyiv is seeking to disrupt Russian military logistics and put pressure on the country’s economy by striking its oil industry.

The Ryazan oil refinery, one of Russia's largest refineries, has temporarily halted operations following strikes by Ukrainian forces, Reuters reports. Unnamed industry sources told Reuters that an oil storage facility at the plant was set on fire.

According to the sources, the attack resulted in a fire at the oil storage facility, damaging several structures, including a rail overpass and a hydrocracking unit used to remove impurities from petroleum products.
