The New York Mets and first baseman Pete Alonso are at an impasse, but one beat reporter spelled out Tuesday how a reunion could still occur.

New York reportedly offered Alonso a three-year contract worth $68-70 million. The offer was seen as a “last ditch effort,” by the Mets. Furthermore, when Alonso declined, the team began to sour on the hopes of his return, via Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

As the New York Mets look to move on from their franchise cornerstone, a reigning Gold Glove slugger is predicted as the solution.

The New York Mets made arguably the best move of the offseason but that doesn't mean that they are done. New York added Juan Soto but an internal superstar remains on the open market. First baseman Pete Alonso still is out there and it's unknown if he will be back.
