About 240 Amazon workers at a company warehouse in Laval, a Montreal suburb, unionized in May, becoming the first of the tech company’s Canadian warehouses to do so. Amazon challenged the union's right to represent the workers but lost at a provincial labor tribunal in October.

Amazon Canada says it will close all seven of its Quebec warehouses and lay off staff over the next two months. The e-commerce giant positioned the move scuttling 1,700 permanent jobs and 250 temporary ones as a way to provide "even more savings to our customers over the long run" and dismissed concerns that it was linked to a recent unionization push in the province.

Amazon Canada is closing all of its warehouses in Quebec, and it will affect approximately 1,700 employees and 350 seasonal workers.

The online retailer says 1,700 permanent employees in the province will be laid off, as will 250 temporary workers

Amazon Canada says it's closing its Quebec sorting and shipping centres, only five years after the company opened a facility in the province.The decision comes after a period of rapid expansion, and the formation of a union at one of its facilities.

“We received a message from Amazon’s lawyers around six o’clock this morning saying that all warehouses in Quebec will be closed,” said the Federation of National Trade Unions. The Quebec union had been negotiating with Amazon since July to create a collective agreement for 300 employees at a warehouse in Laval, a suburb of Montreal.
