The Trump administration on Friday delayed the suspension of the so-called de minimis provision, which allows packages worth less than $800 to enter the country duty-free, a move that helps low-cost shopping sites from China that sell everything from fast fashion to furniture.

Days after signing an order to revoke the de minimis exemption, the president opted to let it continue until the U.S. government has a system for collecting tariffs on Chinese goods.

The sudden shift, implemented with just 48 hours' notice, led to the US Postal Service temporarily stopping package acceptance from China and Hong Kong earlier this week.

Ending tariff exemptions on low-cost packages from China has broad bipartisan support in Washington, and Trump pulled the plug when he raised tariffs on Chinese goods by 10% earlier this week. Goods sent through duty-free packages became subject not only to existing tariffs — 25% for many Chinese products — but also the new 10%.
