A new image from the James Webb Space Telescope depicts the "extreme outer galaxy" in unprecedented detail, NASA researchers say.

Now, the powerful space telescope has pushed it to the edge closer to home in our very own galaxy, the Milky Way. A team of astronomers has pointed the JWST at the outskirts of the Milky Way, observing a region scientists call the "Extreme Outer Galaxy."

The James Webb Space Telescope has peered at some very, very distant objects, but despite its name, Webb's latest target is in our own galaxy. The Extreme Outer Galaxy is a dense star-forming region at the very edge of the Milky Way.
