The epidemic of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States appears to be cooling off after more than two decades, a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study says. Gonorrhea cases dropped for a second year in 2023,

The CDC did not break out most data for county or region, but for New York State in 2023, there were 12,393 cases of all stages of syphilis, or a rate of 63.3 cases per 100,000 people. By both measurements, those numbers were the lowest in three years.

Despite more than 2 million total new sexually transmitted infections in 2023, gonorrhea cases have dropped for the second year in a row.

The number of sexually transmitted infections (STI) in the United States in 2023 was down nearly 2% from the year before, a sign the epidemic could be slowing, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Tuesday.

Based on the most recent CDC data, Georgia was ranked 3rd for gonorrhea, 5th for chlamydia and 14th for cases of syphilis, by number of reported cases.

"I’m encouraged, and it’s been a long time since I felt that way” about the nation’s epidemic of sexually transmitted infections, said the Center for Disease Control (CDC)
