Several school districts have closed or delayed opening on Wednesday, January 29 due to the overnight snow slowing the morning commute.

Some neighborhood roads remain icy after Sunday’s snow, and wind chills are forecast to drop to near zero early Tuesday. Cold weather advisories are in effect throughout the region from 7 p.m. Monday until 10 a.m. Tuesday and from 10 p.m. Tuesday to 10 a.m. Thursday. Some schools announced delayed openings and cancellations Tuesday.

The Syracuse City School District, the region’s largest with more than 17,000 students, announced this morning it was closing for the day due to the extreme cold. The forecast calls for a low of 3 degrees and a wind chill of minus 11, according to the National Weather Service.

New York public schools will be closed on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, in recognition of the Lunar New Year. The holiday, widely celebrated by Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities, was officially added to the school calendar by Governor Kathy Hochul in January 2024.
