White House Says Drones Were Authorized ‘Research’ Vessels Cleared by the FAA, Accompanied by Hobbyists
The White House now says that the drones seen flying over vast swaths of the East Coast were actually just research vessels approved for flight by the Federal Aviation Administration. After those drones took flight and led to concerns among many Americans, some hobbyists also took flight amid the frenzy, the administration says.
More mysterious drone sightings reported in Northeast
The "potential drone" was reportedly seen over Freeway Airport, around 10 miles north of Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the information about the drones came directly from President Donald Trump.
Though it's pretty well-known that bird strikes can cause major damage to commercial planes, less is known about the impact of drones on airplanes.
