The police departments and sheriff 's offices of thousands of towns, cities, and counties across the United States have tactical units, which are usually called Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), Sheriff's Emergency Response Team, (SERT), or Emergency Response Team (ERT).

The team is a member of the Statewide Region 5 Regional Anti-Terrorism Task Force (RATTF) and stands ready with other law enforcement teams to respond to critical incidents and acts of terrorism throughout the State of Florida.

Officers from more than 65 police departments and sheriff offices in the State of Florida have attended along with agents, officers, and deputies from more than 22 out-of-state and Federal agencies. Extensive scenario-based training using marking cartridges supplement classroom work.

Our SWAT Unit has been involved in numerous joint operations with the Drug Enforcement Administration, United States Secret Service, Florida Department of Law Enforcement and local law enforcement agencies.

The Sarasota Police Department provides the community with an added layer of public safety by fielding a SWAT team. The team is comprised of twenty specially trained law enforcement professionals, whose main objective is the preservation of life during high-risk operations and during the resolution of critical incidents.

Thirty-eight deputies staff the BSO SWAT Team including 9 county firefighter paramedics and 12 negotiators. Members are part-time team members who have collateral functions within the agency.
