Michael Cole: The Man Who Helped Shape Communication at UC San Diego. When Michael Cole joined the UC San Diego faculty in 1978, he was already a distinguished cultural psychologist at The Rockefeller University in New York City.

For the past decade I have been engaged in a large, and growing, analysis of a large number of special "microcultures" ("Fifth Dimensions") that have been designed to promote the intellectual and social development of children.

Cole's work focuses on the elaboration of a mediational theory of mind. He has conducted cross-cultural research on cognitive development, especially as it relates to the role of literacy and schooling.
