The 1.14-mile R&D Tunnel, located in Hawthorne, CA, is used for testing The Boring Company's public transportation systems, Loop and Hyperloop. The Hawthorne R&D Tunnel, including SpaceX and O’Leary Station, was completed in December 2018 for less than $10 Million.
Loop — The Boring Company
The United States Department of Homeland Security Transportation Security Administration awarded The Boring Company’s LVCC Loop the Gold Standard Award, the highest rating possible in a review that evaluates 17 categories of security and emergency preparedness.
Tunnels — The Boring Company
Once a tunnel boring machine has reached its operating depth of two tunnel diameters, tunneling causes less noise and vibration at the surface than a pedestrian. Most utilities are located within 10 feet of the surface. Our tunnels are typically more than 30 feet below the surface, where underground space is currently unused.
LVCC — The Boring Company
The LVCC Loop — a three-station transportation system consisting of 1.7 miles of tunnel — was built in approximately one year, using the now-legacy Godot tunnel boring machine. The system's twin tunnels, two surface stations, and one subsurface station cost approximately $47 million (firm-fixed price).
