I usually use hdparm to benchmark my HDD's. You can benchmark both the direct reads and the cached reads. You'll want to run the commands a couple of times to establish an average value. Examples. Here's a direct read. $ sudo hdparm -t /dev/sda2 /dev/sda2: Timing buffered disk reads: 302 MB in 3.00 seconds = 100.58 MB/sec And here's a cached read.

Note that despite its name CrystalDiskMark is actually a benchmark of a filesysystem on a particular disk - it can't do I/O raw to the disk alone. As such it will always have filesystem overhead in it (not necessarily a bad thing but something to be aware of e.g. because the filesystems being compared might not be the same).

I did notice a great improvement on windows, with programs opening up almost instantly. But in Linux, I barely noticed some improvements.

You can see size of this cache, e.g. with ‘top’ as ‘buff/cache’. It means, for usual IO operations data is put to memory and then transferred to disk (for write operations) or to the requesting process (for reads).
